Jakarta Hotel Hunt: Luxury vs. Budget Near Top Malls!

Planning a Jakarta getaway with three friends and need the perfect hotel near the best shopping and dining?  I'm torn between Ascott, Parkroyal, The Orient, Pullman Thamrin, and Gunawarman Hotel – have you stayed at any of these?  Your insights are invaluable!  While Keraton, Kempinski, Grand Hyatt, and Park Hyatt look amazing, they're a bit outside our budget. 

Our priorities are proximity to malls (Grand Indonesia, Plaza Indonesia, Senayan City, Ashta District 8, Thamrin City are on our list!), easy access to transport (Grab and taxis), and a clean, safe environment. 

Speaking of transport, how does taxi payment work in Jakarta? Is Blue Bird the main taxi service, and can you pay by card or is cash preferred?  Is Grab readily available, or would hiring a driver for the duration be more efficient and cost-effective?  Any tips on navigating Jakarta's transportation scene would be greatly appreciated!
