Saudi Arabia is set to partially lift its 73-year-old ban on alcohol in 2026, marking a significant cultural shift as the kingdom prepares to host the FIFA World Cup in 2034. As part of the Vision 2030 initiative to modernize and attract global tourism, alcohol will be permitted in upscale venues such as hotels, restaurants, and cafes within designated tourist areas . The policy change will allow the sale of wine, beer, and cider at licensed locations, including five-star hotels, luxury resorts, and expat-friendly compounds. However, alcohol will remain banned in public spaces, homes, shops, and fan zones, with spirits and hard liquors over 20% ABV still prohibited . In a related development, Saudi Arabia has opened its first liquor store in over 70 years, located in Riyadh's Diplomatic Quarter. This store is restricted to non-Muslim diplomats and operates under strict regulations, including age restrictions and purchase quotas managed through a mobile application . These changes reflect Saudi Arabia's efforts to balance modernization with cultural and religious values, aiming to enhance its appeal as a global tourism and business destination.
